The junction of Hwy 395 and Hwy 74 once supported a Post office, March 1887 to June 1917. This are was named for A. W. Nye a well known early settler in Umatilla County.
Coming down from Battle Mountain to Nye Junction the forest gives way to plains. Pronghorn antelope, white tail deer and ring-necked pheasants can be seen and the granite ridge becomes the surging hills of the basalt plateau.
On your ride back to Heppner your trail leads through prairie and wheat fields. Red-tailed hawks are often seen patrolling the airways and watch the roadway for ground squirrels making their way across.
