Information to guests visiting for the Solar Eclipse: WELCOME!

  • Think about coming early and staying an extra day to accommodate expected traffic.
  • Extreme Fire Danger-vehicles cause wildfire; DO NOT PARK in dry grass or along side of road
  • Expect high traffic numbers and delays – carry extra food and water.
  • Some roads are gravel; all are one lane each direction and lots of curves.  Watch out for wildlife and livestock in roadways (free range).  Travel safely!
  • Do not block roadways – roads need to remain open and clear for emergencies.
  • Some property and land owners have agreed to overnight parking, camping.  Please make sure you are not trespassing before you set up; you will be asked and expected to move.
  • Bring a map as cell phones and GPS reception may not be available in most areas due to terrain and the increased demand on their systems.
  • You can order a highway map online at “TravelOregon.com”.
  • Make sure you have a full tank of gas (two gas stations - Lexington and Heppner – last stop).
  • Bring Eclipse Glasses or purchase them at Murray’s Drug or at the OHV Park.
  • Carry cash – there are three ATM’s in Heppner: Bank of Eastern Oregon (in Heppner and Ione), Community Bank and Heppner Market Fresh Foods.
  • Prepare for sun and hot temperatures (pack hats/sunscreen).  Leave your pets at home.
  • You are allowed to pump your own gas after gas stations have closed, you will need to use a credit card in Heppner and Lexington.
  • Shuttle buses – Meet at Morrow County Fairgrounds to be taken up to eclipse; buses leave at 7 a.m. and return immediately following the solar eclipse.  To reserve a seat on the bus, call Morrow County Transportation at 541-676-5667, and call 541-676-5536 if you need a ride to the fairgrounds.  Donations appreciated.
  • Stay in Heppner and watch the eclipse at the Willow Creek Dam:   You can park at the ball field parking lot on Hager Street to catch a local shuttle from 8a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Bring a chair, snacks and water and sit in designated areas as directed by the Corps of Engineers employees; or park up around the community homes (don’t block any driveways).  Free Solar Eclipse Glasses for the first 250 people!  No alcohol or smoking allowed.
  • August is the height of fire season in Eastern Oregon.  As a reminder, help us prevent wildfires; protect our natural landscapes by observing the local burn bans:
    • No campfires and open flames
    • Use propane BBQs for cooking
    • Avoid parking in dry grass
    • Dispose of cigarettes responsibly
    • Report wildfires immediately by calling 911; be prepared to provide a location (mile-marker/road/intersection).
    • This HAM frequency will be monitored for emergency purposes – 146.78- PL67hz.
  • Non emergency calls should be made to 541-676-5317.
  • Bring your garbage back with you.  There will be dumpsters for garbage by the Heppner City Park; RV’s dump stations are located at the Willow Creek RV Park - 68965 Willow Creek Road and behind Cornerstone Gallery at 388 N. Main Street (across from the motel).  The cost is $5.  Morrow County Parks has dump stations at all three parks.
